Hey, so let me tell you about this game called SGS OVERLORD. It’s a standalone game all about the WW2 operations in Normandy. It starts on June 6th, 1944, and goes till the end of August when most of the fighting is over. The game uses 3-day turns to cover the whole operation from D-Day onwards.
If you play as the Germans, your job is to hold the front as long as possible. Each week you hold out increases the Reich’s survival chances. On the flip side, if you’re the Allies commander, you need to use American, Canadian, British, and French forces to first get a strong position. Then, you need to break out from Normandy, head towards Paris and the enemy’s heartland, and maybe even win the war by Christmas.
The game goal is to recreate the different phases of the battle in Normandy. You can play the full grand campaign, which covers the whole period from June 6th to the end of August. This campaign has 30 turns, each lasting 3 days, from June 6th to September 3rd, 1944.
There’s also a shorter campaign that starts after the landings, focusing on the tough fighting in the Normandy bocage from June 30th to the end of August. This short campaign lasts 22 turns of 3 days each, from June 30th to September 3rd, 1944.
Another scenario is about capturing a deep water port which was crucial for continuing the campaign. Cherbourg was the only possible target. This scenario lasts 4 weeks, from June 6th to June 26th, 1944, and has 7 turns.
There’s also a scenario covering the famous operation where American forces under Patton and Bradley broke out from Normandy after smashing the German front at Avranches. This scenario lasts 7 weeks, from July 2nd to August 18th, 1944, and has 15 turns.
Based on the game’s success and what players want, more scenarios might be added later, like the Battle of Caen or the Mortain/Falaise campaign. The game is played at the brigade or divisional level for land units on both sides, with smaller units like garrisons and local defenses also in the mix. Air units and naval support are only on the Allied side and are grouped.

In the game one player controls the German forces which include various land units of the Wehrmacht, the Luftwaffe or the Waffen SS. The other player commands American, British, Canadian, Polish, and French troops fighting for the Allies.
The Germans have good quality troops but no air support. They do have solid defensive positions and the advantage of the Normandy terrain, like marshes, woods, forests, and the famous ‘Bocage Normand,’ which offer strong protection. At key moments, they might have local superiority and can put the Allies in tough spots.
Allied troops, with their huge air superiority, must secure key points early on. First, they need to unite their beachheads and secure a supply source by holding a port. Remember weather and supply are super important in this game. Weather can mess with air superiority, and supply issues mostly affect the Allies. These factors can make the campaign feel more like WW1’s position warfare than the fast Blitzkrieg you’d expect.
The game can take 1 hour to many hours to play, with no favored side and the Allies being the hardest to play.
