Let me tell you about this cool game, Vivat Slovakia. It’s an open-world video game set in Slovakia, a new democratic country right between Western and Eastern Europe. Even though communism is mostly gone, the state is still weak, and corruption is everywhere. Money and violence rule everything. They call it the wild 90s. The streets are run by mob gangs, and even the law can’t stop them. They are so powerful that they do whatever they want even in broad daylight. You see racketeering, exploding cars, and other violent stuff every day. Some government elites even use these gangs for their dirty work. Back home, we have a saying: “The difference between the secret service and organized crime is blurry.” Parties that should be enemies are now working together to get money and power. For ordinary people connections are everything and the only way to succeed. There’s a famous saying: “You don’t have what you don’t steal.”
You play as a bald guy in his 30s who works for the secret police. As an undercover taxi driver, you can roam around the town and check on people. The game map of Bratislava is about 10 square kilometers of a lively city. Vivat Slovakia has more than 20 story missions based on real events from the 90s, right after Slovakia split from the Czechoslovak Federation. The game has professional Slovak voice-overs with the main character voiced by Marián Labuda. There are English subtitles for Erasmus students and immigrants from the Iron Curtain period. There are over 30 unique vehicles from that time, from old socialist cars to exclusive imports only bosses could afford. You can use more than 5 different local weapons. Thanks to crowdfunding, many players will have their own mini-stories in the game or be NPCs walking around Bratislava or driving public transport. We turned the real businesses and homes of our players into the game and included them in virtual Bratislava. This is what product placement should look like in a game. There’s a radio station with period music by DJs and speakers from radio _FM, Yanko Kral, and Subtension. There’s also talk radio with stand-up comedians from Silné Reči and you can have your own custom radio with your music.
